The End of Fish
Fish's trial was for the murder of Grace Budd and it lasted all of 10 days. Fish's defense attorney was James Dempsey. When Fish was asked what is his plea he said not guilty by reason of insanity. He claimed insanity because he said that he heard voices from god telling him to do everything that he did. The jurors would eventually find Fish guilty. After the Jurors found Fish guilty they would explain that there was no doubt that he was insane but they said that it didn't matter because they thought he should get the death penalty anyways. There is a story saying that one the judge gave the death sentence to Fish, Fish would thank him for doing so.
Fish was sent to Sing Sing prison in New York. Fish arrived at the prison in March on 1935. The day Fish was executed was January 16, 1936. Once Fish was in the electric chair he helped the executioner put the electrodes on his body. Fish's last words were "I don't even know why I'm here". One witness of the execution started a rumor saying that it took two jolts to kill Fish because the chair shorted out due to the nails in Fish's abdomen but this rumor is false. After the execution Fish's defense attorney, James Dempsey, met with met with reporters saying that in his possession were Fish's final statements, but he would refuse to tell anyone because he said that it was the most vile and disgusting thing that he had ever and will ever read and see.
